Super ads make laughs, live up to super hype

With the Super Bowl each year comes possibly the most widely anticipated part of the game, the Super Bowl commercials. Here is a look at the elite eight from 2012 in my opinion. I judged them on a funny scale from 1 to 10.

Skechers - Dog Racing

This commercial starts out at the beginning of a greyhound race, where they announce that a french bulldog named Mr. Quiggly has been added as a late addition to the race, wearing Skechers running shoes. He gets off to a slow start in the race, but then quickly pulls out way in front of all the other dogs. As he approaches the finish line, he skids to a stop, turns around, and moonwalks across it. Then he turns to the camera and smiles. After a quick description of the new Sketchers running shoes, it turns to Mavericks owner Mark Cuban holding him and talking about a new contract.

Volkswagen – The Bark Side Teaser

This commercial is literally just a full minute of 11 dogs barking to the tune of one of the songs from "Star Wars." One of the dogs is dressed as Chewbacca, another as an Ewok, and another one is dressed as Darth Vader. Toward the very end, a greyhound dressed as an AT-AT walks across the screen. Then the Volkswagen logo appears on the screen, as well as the words "Back. And better than ever." Funny Scale Rating: 9.3

M&M - M&M Stripping

This commercial starts with a female brown M&M talking to two women at a party, and then a guy in the background starts laughing because he thinks she's naked. She then gets mad at the guy, telling him about how she looks naked because her outer layer is brown like the inside of M&Ms and that only a fool would go to a party naked. Then a red M&M comes in and says "So it's that kind of party," and strips off his outer red layer and starts dancing to LMFAO's "I'm sexy and I know it".

Funny Scale Rating: 8.9

Doritos - Missing Cat

This commercial starts with a guy out in his backyard gardening, where he sees a big dog in the middle of burying his missing cat. The dog then comes over to him, growls intimidatingly, and slides a bag of Nacho Cheese Doritos over to the guy, with a post-it note that says "You DIDNT SEE NuTHIN" attached to it. The guy nods and smiles. He's sitting down at his table eating the Doritos when his wife asks him if he's seen their cat, and he looks at the dog, who has another bag of Doritos in its mouth, through the window and says "Nope."

Funny Scale Rating: 8.5

Hyundai - Cheetah Attack

This commercial starts with a guy in a Hyundai Veloster Turbo car next to a guy and a caged Cheetah on a long desert road. The guy in the car looks at and nods to the guy outside of the car, who then lets the cheetah out of the cage as the other guy starts the car. At first the cheetah starts chasing the car, but then it quickly turns around and attacks the guy who let him out of the cage. Then a narrator says "Trust us. It's fast. The Veloster Turbo, from Hyundai."

Funny Scale Rating: 8.3

Dannon Oikos – John Stamos

John Stamos sits down at a table with a women eating Dannon Oikos Greek Yogurt. She feeds him a bite of the yogurt. Then he takes the spoon, and holds it out in front of her mouth, pulling it away as she moves to take the bite. This happens a couple of times, but then she grabs his arm as he is about to do it again. He slowly brings the spoon towards his face, and when their faces get close enough, she gives him a big headbutt, knocking him to the floor, and she eats the yogurt herself. Then a narrator says "Oikos Greek Yogurt: possibly the best yogurt in the world."

Funny Scale Rating: 7.8

Volkswagen - The Dog Strikes Back

An overweight dog sees a Volkswagon through the window, and he tries to chase the car but he can't fit through the window. The dog then looks at himself in the mirror and decides to start losing weight to get in shape. He walks up and down the stairs, runs on a treadmill, drags a carpet with weights on it, and swims in a pool. He sees the car through the window again, and this time he is able to chase it down. The setting then switches to the bar from Star Wars, where a guy laughs and says that the dog is funnier than Darth Vader, who then chokes him using the force for a bit until the guy apologizes.

Funny Scale Rating: 7.2

Doritos - Sling Shot Baby

A kid is on top of a play structure with a bag of Doritos, taunting his grandma and baby brother because they can't get up there and take the Doritos from him. The grandma then takes the baby and pulls him back in his tethering and then releases him, slingshotting him up to where the kid is. The baby grabs the bag of Doritos and then gets swung back to the grandma, and they share the chips.

Funny Scale Rating: 6.8
