With Sunshine State Conference play presenting one of the most grueling schedules in Division II Basketball, the team entered into a crucial transition period for their season.

    It has been a very up and down year for Coach Paul Honsinger and Lady Tritons basketball . Going into winter break, the Lady Tritons were 6-1 and looked impressive in a dominating 71-55 conference win over the Nova Southeastern Sharks. Since then, the Lady Tritons have been streaky, at times winning three in a row despite going 6-6 overall and 4-5 in the Sunshine State Conference as of Feb.

    Tritons guard Wayne Sears Jr. still remembers his first dunk. It was a long summer's day at an outdoor park in his hometown of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., where the 9th-grader honed his game. "Every single day I would go out and…at the end of the day, I'd probably try to dunk like 25 times, something like that," he remembers, "just to put it in the rim.

    With two rounds in the books, the Eckerd College men's golf team began to put the finishing touches on a strong fall campaign at the Marjorie Whitney Invitational hosted by Queens (N.C.) University on Monday. The Tritons (311-311--622) are in a three-way tie for seventh at TPC Sawgrass with Erskine College and St.

    Men's rugby returned home for their first on-campus matches of 2012 last weekend with a two-day rugby jamboree that brought together teams from Florida Gulf Coast University, University of North Florida and the University of Miami. Day one of the rugby weekend featured an early game between UNF and Miami.

    Eckerd's men's rugby side has tallied another epic road victory.  On Saturday, Dec. 3, they crushed the Tampa Barbarians, an independent club for Tampa-area boys under the age of 19, by the score of 70-0.  The Tritons fielded their youngest and least-experienced players against the Barbarians, and these up-and-comers far exceeded the expectation of their veteran teammates.

  • Rugby update

    Men's Rugby   On November 5th, The Eckerd Men's Rugby Club avenged a heartbreaking three point loss to Florida Gulf Coast University.  Four weeks earlier, the men traveled to Ft. Myers to take on the Eagles of FGCU in what would turn into a hard-fought loss in a heavy downpour that soaked the field and led to a defensive struggle.

  • Outgoing Captain Buck prepares for life after Eckerd

    Julian Buck almost didn't come to Eckerd. He almost never became captain and president of the men's rugby team. Luckily for all those who have come into contact with him, he did. After this semester, Julian Buck will graduate from Eckerd College and his eligibility with the rugby team will come to an end.

  • Hedges bring world of experience Hedges brings world of experience to rugby

    The Eckerd Men's Rugby team welcomes a new coach in their bid for a championship season. Coach David Hedges joins the team this fall, bringing along a rare combination of playing and coaching experience dating as far back as 1975. Hedges's playing accomplishments begin in 1975 when he played for "Diggers Kitwe," the eventual national league and championship cup winners in Zambia, Africa.

    Tritons from the Eckerd College varsity sailing team are recognized for their respectable rankings, having made it to the coed and the women's national championships last year. This semester, the team finished first in the South Point District Series.

    Caroline Bond, a junior goalkeeper from Huntington, N.Y., was born 100 percent deaf in both ears. Bond, who started playing soccer when she was 5, has endured her share of setbacks on and off the field before making it to Eckerd. Despite being deaf, Bond communicates after 15 years of speech therapy, along with the help of hearing aids and reading lips.

  • Men's soccer finds stride against nationally ranked opponents

    Men's soccer at Eckerd College has a history of upsetting highly ranked opponents. Just three years ago the Tritons upset #1 ranked Lynn University 2-1 in overtime after Luke Sheekey slotted home the breakaway goal in the final moments of the first overtime.

  • Magee's men kick off 2011 campaign with strong start

    During the overcast evening after a tropical thunderstorm, the Eckerd College men's soccer team extended its unbeaten season in its home opener on Friday, beating Florida Memorial 1-0. Sophomore goalkeeper Toni Virtanen registered the clean sheet with 6 saves, the first shutout for the Tritons this year.

  • Lady Tritons take down Tampa in thrilling upset Lady Tritons take down Tampa in a thrilling upset

    The Eckerd College volleyball team served up an upset special on Friday night by handing perennial powerhouse and newly-ranked No. 1 University of Tampa its first loss of the season in a five-set thriller, 3-2 (25-23, 23-25, 25-21, 17-25, 15-13). Freshman Ali McAlvany hammered down 17 kills and reigning Sunshine State Conference Offensive Player of the Week Lindsay Biggs added 16.

    "Jumpy, responsible and silly," were the three words Volleyball Assistant Coach Jillian Kalvik used to describe Liv Fraser, a middle blocker on the Lady Triton squad. This junior biology major from Millbrook, N.Y., was selected as the Sunshine State Conference defensive player of the week after her phenomenal performance against conference rivals St.

  • Volleyball EC classic Lady Tritons hang tough, extend streak in five sets

    Eckerd College hosted its own women's volleyball tournament this weekend, the Eckerd College Classic. Fans at the Mac saw high-flying, hard-hitting action in the Lady Tritons' Saturday night matches against UNC Pembroke and Millersville on September 10th, but the one to watch was their 5-set thriller against the Sailfish of Palm Beach Atlantic University on Friday the 9th, a struggle that was hotly contested right down to the last few points.

Morial Convention Center, the 26-year-old up-and-comer needed just 53 seconds to drop multi-league champion Jake Shields to the canvas with a brutal knee to the jaw.
