This monday, both Eckerd’s men’s and women’s basketball teams had their home debut against The University of Puerto Rico-Mayaguez at the McArthur Center.
The women’s team opened up their season in a dramatic fashion, setting a program single-game scoring record with a 109-57 victory. Following two UPRM triples in the first quarter to tie the game at 9-9, the Tritons went on a 16-3 scoring run to close the quarter.
The Tritons rolled on behind Abby Whiteye’s 21 points and four 3-pointers. The team’s record-setting 109 points were backed by scores from every player, with seven in the double-digits.
They secured the battle on the boards with 41 rebounds to UPRM’s 21. The team also shot 66.7% from the field and a staggering 50% from behind the arc.
The Men’s team didn’t miss a beat. They followed up the girls game with a 113-66 victory of their own. The team was fueled by an early 9-point scoring run that could not be answered.
Travis Bianco led the way for the Tritons by scoring 24 points. Four other tritons scored in the double-digits. On the defensive front Myron Hagins tallied a career-high five steals, which aided in forcing a total of 22 turnovers by UPRM.
The men’s team improved their record to 2-1 with the win.
Both men’s and women’s teams will be traveling to Palm Beach Atlantic this Saturday, Nov. 23, to face the Sailfish.
