How Latinos Unidos Helps Incoming Latino Students Adjust to a Predominantly White Community

With 9% of Eckerd College’s student body identifying as Hispanic or Latino* it can be easy for these students to feel outnumbered in a community where 77% of students identify as white*. Latinos Unidos brings this 9% together to help Hispanic and Latino students adjust to a predominantly white community. 

“A lot of the people that I have met that are Latino, I met through Latinos Unidos,” said Manu Delgado, a student from South Florida who identifies as Colombian. “I feel like without that there would be no community for Latino people here.” 

Latinos Unidos is a multicultural student-run club on campus for students (both Latino or from other ethnicities) to come together and celebrate diversity on campus, as well as educate the Eckerd community about Hispanic and Latino culture. Students come together once a month for meetings, however there are many events planned between meetings. These events include movies about Latino culture, cookouts and what students describe as family get-togethers where food, dancing and singing plays a big role. 

Latinos Unidos provides students a space to celebrate their different heritages. One event they held, during the fall semester, was a multicultural cooking event where students got together to cook and share foods from their cultures. 

“It felt more like a family event than a club,” described Cristina Lopez Miranda, an international student from Mexico City. 

Latinos Unidos uses this familial atmosphere to help students adjust in a predominately white institution. Many latino students come from communities where it’s mostly other latinos. Going from that to a community like Eckerd, where over three quarters of the student population is white, can be a formidable adjustment. Latinos Unidos creates a place where students can help each other in adjusting in this new community, as well as having a place to express their culture and where they are from.

Con 9% de los estudiantes de Eckerd College que se identifican como Latino o Hispanos* estos estudiantes se pueden sentir como una minoría fácilmente. En una comunidad donde 77% de los estudiantes se identifican como de piel blanca*. Latinos Unidos une a este 9% de estudiantes Latinos y Hispanos, para ayudarlos a ajustarse a una comunidad predominadamente blanca. 

“Muchas de las personas que son latinas que he conocido acá, los conocí por Latinos Unidos. Siento que sin eso no habría ninguna comunidad para personas latinas acá,” dijo Manu Delgado, una estudiante del Sur de Florida que se identifica como Colombiana.

Latinos Unidos es un club multicultural hecho por estudiantes para estudiantes (ambos latinos o de otros orígenes étnicos) para que se unan a celebrar la diversidad en el campus, al igual que educar la comunidad sobre la cultura hispana y latina. Los estudiantes organizan reuniones una vez al mes, pero hay varios eventos que suceden durante el resto del mes. Estos eventos incluyen películas sobre cultura Latina, eventos de cocina, y lo que describen los estudiantes como reuniones familiares donde la comida, el baile y el canto son una gran parte. 

Latinos Unidos une estudiantes para celebrar sus diferentes ascendencia. Un evento que sobresalió, fue un evento de cocina multicultural donde los estudiantes se unieron para cocinar y compartir comidas de sus culturas.

“Se sintió más como un evento familiar que como un club,” describió Cristina Lopez Miranda, una estudiante internacional de Ciudad de México, México. 

Latinos Unidos usa este ambiente de familia para ayudar a los estudiantes a ajustarse a una institución predominantemente blanca. Muchos estudiantes Latinos vienen de comunidades que son más que todo Latinas. Viniendo de una comunidad como esa, a una comunidad como Eckerd, donde más de tres cuartos de los estudiantes son blancos, puede ser un ajuste colosal. Latinos Unidos crea un espacio donde los estudiantes pueden ayudarse el uno al otro a ajustarse a esta comunidad nueva, y además brindarles un espacio para expresar sus cultura y de donde son.
